Land Protection:
The Conservation Commission works as a catalyst to permanently protect land through purchase or via conservation easement. In 1998, we helped the Society for the Protection of NH
Forests to permanently protect the Sharon Bog; in 1999 we helped the NE Forestry Foundation to protect some acreage on Holt Peak. In 2001 we helped support the conservation of the Newton Land
Town Forest:
Sharon citizens voted at Town Meeting in March 2001 to authorize the Conservation Commission to manage the Town Forest and to control the Forest Fund. This will be done in conjunction
with the Board of Selectmen and the ad hoc Town Forest Advisory Committee. The Con Comm has researched and cleared historical roads -- as hiking trails -- in the forest.
Water Quality:
Conduct annual water quality testing on the Gridley River. This work is performed through the NH Volunteer River Assessment Program.
Earth Day:
The Con. Comm is the leader for a town-wide trash pick up day, always held in late April. Trash is sorted and taken to the Recycling Center in Peterborough.
Wetlands Inventories:
12 wetlands have been inventoried by the Conservation Commission to date. Wetland inventories are aimed at wetlands over ten acres. The information, collected as baseline data, will
help determine the value or uniqueness of a wetland, and will be a guide for avoiding negative impact or pollution. Under state law, applications for dredge and fill permits in wetlands are reviewed by the
Conservation Commission.
Education:
Guided educational walks are offered annually.
Research:
Members of the Conservation Commission worked with the ad hoc Natural Resources Committee to study open space and important features in Sharon.
