At the 6th reunion of Sharon Residents in 1890, Samuel W. (Willard) Bass put up $75 to buy Hadley's Grove on
behalf of the Town. The Rev. Burr of Boston, a sometime resident, donated another $25 for fencing, and the land was purchased, given to the Town and dedicated in 1891 as Willard Bass Park.
The property was obtained from the widow, Hannah Hadley. In the conveyed deed it is stipulated that the property serve a
purpose "of holding thereon of public picnics...by the inhabitants of Sharon". The Town must hold some public event on the property at least once in a two-year period
to maintain the Trust.
In 1933, Ruth Taggart Rice added a contiguous parcel, making the Park approximately 2.5 acres in all.
